Alaska Pharmacists: CE Requirements

Alaska Board of Pharmacy licensees must renew their licenses biennially to maintain the right to practice. Renewal applications are due by June 30 on even-numbered years. The biennial license renewal fee is $100, however, if the license is first issued after July 1, the fee is $50.

 

If the licensee is not currently registered with MY LICENSE, they must do so before beginning the renewal process.

  1. Log in to the myAlaska account
  2. If the account has not been linked to the license:
    1. Enter the license number and the authorization code under “Access an Existing License”
  3. Under the “Professional Licenses” section, select the license number due for renewal
  4. Select “Renew License” and follow the prompts

Biennial Continuing Education Requirements

There is a total minimum requirement of 30 continuing education hours to be completed every 2 years. These hours may be obtained through home study or live webinars. 

Additional CE Requirements

Pharmacists with authorization to administer vaccines or emergency medications are required to complete a 1-hour training every 2 years on this subject.

Pharmacists involved in dispensing opioid overdose medication are required to complete a one-time 1-hour training on this subject.

Section 12 AAC 52.320 – Continuing education requirements for pharmacists

(a) Except as provided in (c) of this section, an applicant for renewal of a pharmacist license shall certify having completed 30 contact hours of continuing education accepted by the board under 12 AAC 52.340(a) during the concluding license period.

 

(b) This section does not prevent the board from imposing additional continuing education requirements under its disciplinary powers.

 

(c) An individual who is applying for renewal of a pharmacist license for the first time shall certify having completed one half of the continuing education requirements in (a) of this section for each complete 12 month period that the applicant was licensed during the concluding license period.

 

(d) An applicant for reinstatement of a pharmacist license that has expired shall certify that the applicant completed the continuing education requirements in (a) of this section before applying for reinstatement.

 

(e) A pharmacist administering a vaccine or related emergency medication under 12 AAC 52.992 shall certify having completed one hour of Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) approved continuing education specific to immunizations or vaccines as part of the 30 contact hours of continuing education required under (a) of this section.

 

Section 12 AAC 52.325 – Continuing education requirements for pharmacy technicians

(a) Except as provided in (c) of this section, an applicant for renewal of a pharmacy technician license shall certify that, during the concluding licensing period, the applicant

  1. completed 10 contact hours of continuing education accepted by the board under 12 AAC 52.340; or
  2. obtained initial certification as a pharmacy technician by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).

 

(b) This section does not prevent the board from imposing additional continuing education requirements under its disciplinary powers.

 

(c) Instead of complying with the continuing education requirements in (a) of this section, an applicant for renewal of a pharmacy technician license for the first time may

 

  1. verify in an affidavit, on an application for renewal, that the applicant has read the state statutes and regulations compiled by the board; and
  2. submit an affidavit, signed by the pharmacist-in-charge, verifying the applicant’s pharmacy technician training in accordance with 12 AAC 52.230.

(d) An applicant for reinstatement of a pharmacy technician license that has expired shall certify that the applicant completed the continuing education requirements in (a) of this section before applying for reinstatement.

 

(e) A pharmacy technician who holds a national certification, before administering a vaccine or related emergency medication under 12 AAC 52.992, shall certify having completed one hour of ACPE-approved continuing education specific to immunizations or vaccines as part of the 10 contact hours of continuing education required under (a) of this section.

 

Section 12 AAC 52.330 – Alternative continuing education schedule

An individual licensed under AS 08.80 may apply to the board for an alternative schedule of continuing education if the individual’s failure to meet the continuing education requirements in 12 AAC 52.320 is due to illness or other extenuating circumstances.

The Alaska Board of Pharmacy does allow for licensure by reciprocity for pharmacists. The applicant must: 

  • Obtain college or university official transcripts
  • Obtain an Official Verification of Licensure (VOL) from each state in which the applicant has ever held a license
  • Complete a Certificate of Moral Character
  • Provide a NAPB Application for License Transfer
  • Register and pass the MPJE
  • Provide NAPLEX score
  • Provide a Verification of Work or Internship Form
    • Requires 1500 practical experience hours (must be from the year before submission of the application)
  • Authorize the release of records
  • Complete the Alaska Board of Pharmacy application
  • Pay application and license fees

The Pharmacy Technician License Application can be found on the Alaska Department of Commerce website. The application must be completed, signed, and notarized and a license fee will be due upon submission. Furthermore, applicants must also complete an Authorization for Release of Records form.

 

To be eligible for consideration, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Education Criteria: A high school diploma or GED is a prerequisite.
  • Criminal Record: Applicants should not have any prior criminal convictions.
