Nebraska CE Requirements For Pharmacists

Nebraska Board of Pharmacy licensees must renew their licenses biennially to maintain the right to practice. Renewal applications are due by January 1 of even-numbered years. The biennial license renewal fee is $178.

Biennial Continuing Education Requirements

The Nebraska Board of Pharmacy requires 30 continuing education (CE) hours to be completed every 2 years prior to the renewal date of January 1. These education hours may be completed in a live or home study setting.

Section 172-128-004: RENEWAL, WAIVER OF CONTINUING EDUCATION, AND INACTIVE STATUS

The individual must meet the requirements set out in 172 NAC 10 and this chapter.

004.01 CREDENTIAL EXPIRATION DATES. All pharmacist licenses issued by the Department expire on January 1 of each even-numbered year. All pharmacy technician registrations issued by the Department expire on January 1 of each odd-numbered year. Pharmacist intern registrations are not renewable and expire as set out in Neb. Rev. Stat. § 38-2854.

Section 172-128-005: CONTINUING COMPETENCY

During the 24 months prior to the license renewal date, individuals holding active licenses must complete 30 of continuing education hours from an approved continuing education provider.

005.01 APPROVED CONTINUING EDUCATION PROVIDERS. 

The following are approved continuing education providers:

(A) The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE);

(B) The Nebraska Council for Continuing Pharmacy Education (NCCPE);

(C) The Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) Category 1 continuing education; or

(D) Other providers demonstrating the same quality continuing education standards as those established in the Criteria for Quality of Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and approved by the Board of Pharmacy.

005.02 PHARMACY SPECIALTY CERTIFICATION. Certification in a specialty through the Board of Pharmacy Specialties which is obtained or maintained during the renewal period meets the requirement for continuing competency.

005.03 DIABETES EDUCATOR CERTIFICATION. Certification through the National Certification Board of Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) which is obtained or maintained during the renewal period meets the requirement for continuing competency.

The Nebraska Board of Pharmacy does allow for licensure by reciprocity for pharmacists if licensed in another state/territory. The applicant must: 

  • Pass the Nebraska MPJE with a score of at least 75

Additionally, if the applicant has had any prior misdemeanors or felonies, they must submit a copy of the court record, an explanation of events, and a letter from the applicant’s probation officer if applicable.

The Nebraska State Board of Pharmacy requires a minimum of 30 continuing education hours every 2 years. The CE requirement must be fulfilled by the renewal date of January 1.

A pharmacist license may be obtained through examination or reciprocity. To obtain licensure via examination, the applicant must:

  • Pass the NAPLEX and Nebraska MPJE with a score of at least 75
  • Complete and submit the Nebraska Application for a Pharmacist License 
  • Provide proof of US citizenship/lawful presence 
  • Have their respective college of pharmacy mail an official transcript to the Board
  • Pay any application fees by check or money order (see Nebraska Application for a Pharmacist License for applicable licensing fee)

Additionally, if the applicant has had any prior misdemeanors or felonies, they must submit a copy of the court record, an explanation of events, and a letter from the applicant’s probation officer if applicable.

Nebraska CE Requirements For Pharmacy Technicians

Nebraska-registered pharmacy technicians must renew their licenses biennially to maintain the right to practice. Registration renewal applications are due by January 1 of odd-numbered years.

Continuing Education Requirements

The Nebraska Board of Pharmacy does not require registered technicians to complete continuing education hours for the renewal of licensure. If the technician is nationally certified, refer to the appropriate licensing body such as PTCB for more information on their respective requirements.

To become a registered pharmacy technician, the applicant must: 

  • Be 18 years of age
  • Be a US citizen or obtain lawful presence
  • Be without any non-alcohol, drug-related misdemeanor or felony
  • Complete and submit the Application for Registration as a Pharmacy Technician
  • Provide proof of high school graduation or equivalent 
  • Pay a registration fee of $25

Additionally, if a pharmacy technician was registered as of January 1, 2016, they must have completed a board-approved state or national pharmacy technician certification program. If the technician was registered after January 1, 2016, they must become certified within 1 year of registration.
