Kansas CE Requirements For Pharmacists

Verify a pharmacist license via the Kansas Board of Pharmacy website here.
Pharmacists licenses are renewed every two years in the state of Kansas. The renewal period is mid-May through June 30 each year. Renewals should be completed through the Board’s Online Licensing Portal which can be accessed with this link. Please note, there is no grace period for renewals. Pharmacist licenses expire on June 30 at 11:59pm of the renewal year. A late fee will be required to renew a license that expires. Renewal applications usually open 30-45 days prior to the expiration date. A reminder will be emailed around that time to the email address on record.
  • All ACPE-approved courses are approved in Kansas for CE credit
  • Courses approved by other state pharmacy boards are also approved in Kansas
  • Additional CE hours cannot be carried over to the next renewal period. Acquisition of CE begins the first day of the month following the renewal period.

Additional CE Requirements

As of July 1, 2023 pharmacists must complete a new requirement of 1 hour of CE each renewal cycle. This course designated by the board is “K-TRACS for Pharmacies: Good Data In, Good Data Out.” The requirement counts toward the 30 hour total required for renewal. 

Kansas-approved CE programs should NOT include the following: 

  • In-service programs
  • On-the-job training
  • Orientation for a job
  • An education program open to the general public
  • CPR course or BLS course
  • Emergency or disaster training 
  • Direct experience at healthcare facility under a code blue
  • Testing out of a course or medical school courses

 

License Renewal Exemptions

CE hours may be prorated for licensure periods which are less than biennial at a rate of 1.25 clock hours per month.

68-1-1b 

(b)(1) “Thirty clock-hours of continuing education shall be required for renewal of a pharmacist license during each licensure period. Continuing education clock-hours may be prorated for licensure periods that are less than biennial at a rate of 1.25 clock-hours per month. 

(2) Each licensee shall complete a continuing education course consisting of one clock-hour that is provided by the board for renewal of a pharmacist license, which shall be counted toward the 30 clock-hour requirement. This paragraph shall take effect on July 1, 2023. 

(c)(1) Each continuing education program shall be approved by the board. Each provider or licensee shall submit the continuing education program to the board at least 10 days in advance for consideration for approval. Each provider shall advertise the continuing education program as having only pending approval until the provider is notified of approval by the board. 

(2) Continuing education programs shall not include in-service programs, on-the-job training, orientation for a job, an education program open to the general public, a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) course, a basic cardiac life support (BCLS) course, emergency or disaster training or direct experience at a healthcare facility under a code blue, testing out of a course, and medical school courses. 

(d) Within 30 days of completion, each licensee shall submit to the board proof of completion of any approved continuing education program not reported to the ACPE-NABP CPE monitor service. No credit shall be given for any certificate of completion received by the board after the June 30 expiration date of each licensure period.  

(e) A licensee shall not be allowed to carry forward excess clock-hours earned in one licensure period into the next licensure period. 

(f) The required continuing education shall be obtained in the two-year licensure period ending on the June 30 expiration date of each license.” 

Pharmacists that have been licensed in another state for more than 90 days and did not transfer their NAPLEX score to Kansas may use the Licensure Application by Reciprocity/Score Transfer. The fee to apply is $172. If you have an active intern registration in Kansas, you may only need to pay $125. Pharmacists must complete 30 hours of board approved CE for each biennial renewal period. There is a 1 hour CE requirement each cycle designated “K-TRAC for Pharmacies”. This course hour can count toward the total CE hour requirement.

  • Complete the Kansas Licensure Application for “Licensure by Examination or Score Transfer”
  • Proof of one year of pharmaceutical experience from your School of Pharmacy or State board in the form of at least 1,740 intern hours
  • Take and pass both the NAPLEX and Kansas state MPJE
  • Complete a criminal background check & fingerprint card (if not previously done)
  • Apply online with the Board’s Licensing Portal found at this ​​link
  • Pay required fee of $147 for the New Pharmacist License application
    • If you have an active intern registration in Kansas, you may only need to pay $100

CE that a pharmacist in Kansas obtains can be many different formats such as lecture, classes, or correspondence courses that the licensee obtains live or by pre-recording. All 30 hours of CE may be completed via correspondence courses from home.

Kansas CE Requirements For Pharmacy Technicians

  • Registrations are renewed every two years
  • Pharmacy technician registrations expire on October 31 at 11:59pm of the renewal year
  • There is no grace period for renewals; technicians will need to re-apply if their registration has expired. 
  • Renew online through the portal using this link and receive your renewed registration in the mail. 
  • Technicians can renew online between September 15 and October 31. There is a $20 renewal fee. 
  • Technicians will be required to pass a technician certification exam before the first renewal or, if previously registered, at the time of application. You can either take the PTCB exam or the ExCPT exam. 

Pharmacy technicians are required to complete 20 hours of approved CE for each biennial renewal period. Technicians may complete CE approved for pharmacists or pharmacy technicians. Register for NABP CPE monitor to track CE hours.
