Community Education Specialist, Connecticut Poison Control Center, University of Connecticut Health Center

Amy Hanoian-Fontana, M.A., EMT-B, Community Education Specialist at the Connecticut Poison Control Center has been with the Connecticut Poison Control Center at the University of CT Health Center for over 17 years. She designs, presents and evaluates presentations and workshops on various poison topics such as poison center services, common pediatric poisonings, emerging poisoning/drug trends, youth suicide, opioids, and 911 dispatcher & EMS continuing education.  Amy engages the media in all mediums, creates print and web materials, and actively participates in relationship building activities. 

Amy graduated from Connecticut College in New London, where she majored in Hispanic Studies and minored in Theater, while earning a CT teaching certificate.  She taught Spanish at the middle and high school levels for 5 years. She earned her M.A. in Communications from the University of Hartford, completed the UCLA/Johnson & Johnson Health Care Executive Program, and is also an Emergency Medical Technician.  She has an active role in the American Association of Poison Control Centers and sits on their public education committee.  She is a member of multiple statewide injury prevention, substance abuse and public health groups.  Recently she was awarded the University of CT Provost Award for Excellence in Outreach and Public Engagement.
