Leah Sera, PharmD, BCPS

Assistant Professor, University of Maryland School of Pharmacy

Dr. Sera received her PharmD from the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy in 2010. She completed a pharmacy practice residency at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, MD and a specialty residency in pain management and palliative care at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. She is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist.

As an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy Dr. Sera teaches on pain and palliative care topics in a variety of required and elective courses and mentors pharmacy students in the Geriatric and Palliative Care Pathway.

Currently Dr. Sera maintains a clinical practice at Medstar Montgomery Medical Center, a community hospital in Olney, MD, where she works with an interdisciplinary inpatient palliative medicine team.

Dr. Sera has been invited to speak on pain management topics both at professional pharmacy conferences and at medical centers such as the National Institutes of Health. She has published research on medication prescribing practices in hospice patients in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine and in Progress in Palliative Care. Her current research examines medication prescribing in hospice patients with opioid-induced constipation and heart failure, and attitudes of pharmacy students regarding palliative care education throughout the curriculum.
