  • Overview

    This session is part of the Pain Management Specialty Pharmacist series.  It explores the effective management of pain within the context of the current opioid crisis.  This session examines the concept of addiction and explores the correlation between the rate of overdose deaths and the rate of prescribing of opioid medications.   In addition, the introduction of abuse-deterrent formulations is explored as a method of reducing prescription drug abuse. Morphine milligram equivalent dosing is discussed within the context of the CDC’s chronic pain guidelines.

    Recognize how the relative risks of addiction, overdose, and overdose death correlates with the use of identified dosage thresholds of high-risk opioid dosages.
    Recognize the correlation between the rate of opioid overdose deaths and the rate of prescribing (and dispensing) of prescription opioid medications.
    Calculate morphine milligram equivalent daily dosages (MMEs/Day) based on the 2016 CDC Chronic Pain Opioid Guidelines.
    Recognize how the various classifications of abuse-deterrent formulation (ADF) opioid medications function to prevent specific manners of prescription drug abuse.
