  • Overview

Opioid abuse and overdose are significant public health issues throughout the country and are a growing problem. According to the CDC, the number of opioid-related deaths has quadrupled since 1999. Naloxone is considered the medication of choice in reversing opioid overdose symptoms, and has been shown to reduce morbidity and mortality when made readily available to the community. Many states have approved legislation which allow pharmacists to dispense naloxone under standing orders or drug therapy management agreements. Pharmacists can save lives by identifying patients who would be a good candidate to receive naloxone prescriptions. Pharmacist should be knowledgeable about the symptoms of opioid overdose and the treatment with naloxone and rescue breathing.
