It’s More Than a Headache: A Pharmacist’s Survival of a Ruptured Brain Aneurysm and Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

Taught by: Tracy Faulkner, PharmD | Premiering: 6/13/23 10:30 AM ET

brain pharmacist training

In the United States, it is estimated that 1 in 50 people have an unruptured brain aneurysm (~6M people). Every 18 minutes, a brain aneurysm ruptures. Unfortunately, nearly half of ruptured aneurysms are fatal. Those who survive this medical emergency often experience lifelong debilitating challenges, which may be invisible to the human eye.

A pharmacist colleague shares her story of survival after experiencing this devastating life event – a ruptured brain aneurysm and a severe subarachnoid hemorrhage. According to her world-renowned neurosurgery team, she beat the odds. She uses her preserved gift of speech for patient advocacy and brain aneurysm awareness.

This webinar is designed for pharmacists and nurses to learn how to:

  • Identify the clinical presentation of a suspected aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH)
  • Recognize the management of patients with an aSAH
  • Identify lifestyle management for brain health after an aSAH

Beyond the Classroom: Veterinary Pharmacy

Taught by: Lauren Forsythe, PharmD, DICVP, FSVHP | Premiering: 6/28/23 8:00 PM ET

The provision of care for animals has historically fallen to veterinarians, but the rapid uptake of companion pets during COVID and the advancement of pharmacologic treatment options has expanded the potential role of the community pharmacist. Pharmacists are the only human health care professionals expected to care for all species of patients and often have minimal training in this area.

Join us for an interprofessional panel to hear a veterinary pharmacist and veterinarian discuss the differences in our legal and regulatory systems and opportunities to streamline communications, reduce errors, and expand services to improve care for our animal patients.

This webinar is designed for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and nurses to learn how to:

  • Contrast specific differences in use of technology and patient data between pharmacy and veterinary practice settings
  • Define regulatory guidance for use of FDA-approved medicines in animals and how to determine when reformulation is allowed/may be needed
  • Identify how pharmacists can reduce errors and provide services to offer optimal care for animal patients

Cheers! A Review of the New American Geriatrics Society (AGS) Beers Criteria

Taught by: Mark Garofoli, PharmD, MBA, BCGP, CPE, CTTS | Premiering: 6/30/23 10:30 AM ET

Hopefully we’ll all end up being a geriatric patient at some point in our lives, right? So, why not start specializing in geriatric care ahead of time? Or, at least start reviewing what the experts recommend, of course! Welcome to the room: The recent AGS Beers Criteria Update (released in 2023, ironically enough).

As a primer, we will review the differences among generations with regards to sociological and psychological factors, and then the changing physiology of a typical geriatric patient, which is the driving force for the changes in medication selection and dosage. We will first review the pertinent updates since the last 2019 Beers List update, and certainly discuss overall general suggestions, including potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) for utilization with geriatric patients, disease state-specific recommendations (particularly kidney function decline), drug-drug interactions of highest concern, and much more.

This webinar was designed for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and nurses to learn how to:

  • Recall common anatomical and physiological aging changes that can affect the safety and efficacy of medications
  • Identify potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) for utilization in older adults based on the most recent AGS Beers Criteria update
  • Recognize potentially inappropriate drug interactions for older adults, based on the most recent AGS Beers Criteria update

A Look Back at the Courses We Launched in May

Here’s what freeCE members thought about the courses we launched last month:

Conversations of Legal Liability and Risk: Chronic Pain and Opioid Prescriptions

“It’s been a long time since I really enjoyed doing a CE. I really appreciate the information that you gave and I felt that it was very informative. This will be the first time since I’ve joined PharmCon that I will look for an instructors name to see who’s teaching future courses when choosing a CE. The information was presented well and not hard to understand you didn’t bog us down with a lot of technical jargon or make it overly complicated. Informative and straight to the point. Thank you.”

– Lauren, pharmacy technician

From the Poison Control Files: Cannabis Emergencies

“I thought this was a great program and the stories made it very interesting- it was easy to follow and I enjoyed it.”

– Janelle, pharmacist

Changing the Alphabet: ABCD to ABE for COPD Assessment

“The instructor was very well prepared and the slides were easy to follow; excellent learning slides”

– Jennifer, pharmacist

Beyond the Classroom: Women’s Health

“I really enjoyed the panel format – it is much more engaging. I also liked that they answered questions throughout the presentation, which allows questions to be answered during the discussion of relevant information.”

– Patricia, pharmacist

Weekly Dose, Pete Kreckel

“These 30 min CEs are awesome! They are very informative and give pharmacists a great intro into a few topics without losing the audience’s attention. The speaker/presenter is also great at keeping the audience engaged.”

– Andrew, pharmacist

“This professor has absolutely been my favorite. Explained the information and presented all of the information in a memorable and explanatory way. Had a Professor 50+ years ago: well Dr Marcus Jordan plus Dr Easterly that we’re capable of doing the same thing… at the time you could remember every word they said. Hat’s off professor…lol. Hope I passed the exam or they will feel bad!!”

– Ron, pharmacist

“After a long day I was somewhat dreading coming to my first Weekly Dose. He made it so entertaining and informative! Kudos! I will be back for my live CE requirements.”

– Alexander, pharmacist
