South Dakota CE Requirements For Pharmacists

South Dakota Board of Pharmacy licensees must renew their licenses annually to maintain the right to practice. Renewal applications are due by September 30 with a renewal fee of $125. Log onto the South Dakota Board of Pharmacy portal to begin the process.

The South Dakota Board of Pharmacy requires 12 continuing education (CE) hours to be completed annually prior to the renewal date of September 30. These education hours may be completed in a live or home study setting.

Additional CE Requirements

If the pharmacist seeking renewal is authorized to administer influenza vaccines, 2 CE hours are required each year on the topic of immunizations.

36-11-23.1. Continuing education program established.

There is hereby established a program of continuing education for licensed pharmacists within this state.

36-11-23.2. Rules relating to continuing education–Maximum annual requirement.

The State Board of Pharmacy shall promulgate rules pertaining to continuing education of pharmacists. Such continuing education program shall not exceed twelve hours in length in any one year.

36-11-23.3. Continuing education required for relicensure.

As of October 1, 1980, no active pharmacist shall be eligible for relicensure in this state unless the pharmacist has met the continuing education requirements established by the State Board of Pharmacy.

36-11-23.4. Advisory council on continuing education.

There is hereby established an advisory council to the State Board of Pharmacy consisting of two pharmacists appointed by the State Board of Pharmacy, two pharmacists appointed by the state college of pharmacy and four pharmacists appointed by the South Dakota Pharmacists Association who shall serve without compensation and whose duties shall be to advise the State Board of Pharmacy in the establishment and accreditation of programs of continuing education.

The South Dakota Board of Pharmacy does allow for licensure by reciprocity for pharmacists. The applicant must: 

  • Complete the Application for Licensure as a Pharmacist in South Dakota using the SD Board of Pharmacy portal
    • This application must be approved before permission is given to take the MPJE
  • Pay a reciprocity fee of $150 as well as an initial license fee of $35
  • Complete the NABP License Transfer Application
  • Register for and purchase the MPJE through the NABP website
    • After the purchase is completed, an Authorization to Test (ATT) code will be emailed to the applicant
  • Take and pass the MPJE exam

The South Dakota State Board of Pharmacy requires a minimum of 12 continuing education hours on an annual basis. This requirement must be completed by September 30 to renew.

A pharmacist license may be obtained through examination or reciprocity. To obtain licensure via examination, the applicant must:

  • Graduate from an accredited school/college of pharmacy
    • Have the college submit an official transcript to the NABP via email, mail or through the NABP e-Profile Connect
  • Complete the Application for Licensure as a Pharmacist in South Dakota using the SD Board of Pharmacy portal
    • This application must be approved before permission is given to take the NAPLEX or MPJE
  • Upload required documentation
    • Proof of required internship hours (240 IPPE hours and 1600 APPE hours)
    • Passport quality photo- size 2 ¼” x 3 ¼”
    • A copy of a US or state government photo ID
  • Register for and purchase both the NAPLEX and MPJE through the NABP website
    • After the purchase is completed, an Authorization to Test (ATT) code will be emailed to the applicant
  • Take and pass the NAPLEX and MPJE exams

South Dakota CE Requirements For Pharmacy Technicians

South Dakota-registered pharmacy technicians must renew their licenses annually to maintain the right to practice. Registration renewal applications are due by October 31 each year. Additionally, pharmacy technicians will be required to maintain national certification through a program such as the PTCB. CPhT Certificants must complete 20 CE hours every 2 years to renew. Applicants must complete and submit their application by the appropriate deadline, which corresponds to the initial day of the certification expiration month.

The South Dakota Board of Pharmacy does not require registered technicians to complete continuing education hours, however, pharmacy technicians will be required to maintain national certification through a program such as the PTCB

*A maximum of 5 CE hours are allowed to be pharmacist-specific.

Technician registration should be completed within 30 days of start of employment at a South Dakota pharmacy. To become a registered pharmacy technician, the applicant must: 
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Hold a high school diploma or GED
  • Be employed in South Dakota as a pharmacy technician
  • Complete the Pharmacy Technician New Registration Application and pay a $25 application fee
    • Required information: personal information, current employer’s pharmacy license number and previous employment information
    • Required documents if applicable: current PTCB or ExCPT certificate and an explanation of any felonies or misdemeanors 
*South Dakota registered pharmacy technicians must become nationally certified within 2 years of registration.
